Cozumel, Mexico DIY Walking Tour

On our 5 night Riviera Maya cruise with Virgin Voyages. One of our stops was at Cozumel, Mexico. Before visiting we planned out a DIY walking tour in advance that would be both economical as well as visit spots that could be interesting to us. We kept in mind that we had less than 12 hours at this port and we made sure not to exhaust ourselves and also not be out too late; keeping our safety into consideration. This ended up being a very leisurely walk - a total distance of 4km (~2.5miles) and even when stopping, sitting and visiting the stops should be about a 3-4 hour walking tour. At no point did we find that any streets seemed dangerous or sketchy. Our stop at Cozumel was on the third day of our cruise.

A. Punta Langosta Pier

Our first stop is a nice photo opportunity with the Cozumel sign.

B. Mega Soriana

As foodies, we wanted to try to see if we could experience how the locals would shop and dine so when we saw that there was a supermarket within walking distance from the pier, we made sure to add it to our stop list. This supermarket is equivalent to superstores like Walmart and Costco; selling everything from daily essentials to clothing and electronics. It was worth the visit and a good place to stop if you're needing anything that you forgot to bring on the ship.

C. Municipal Market

A nice contrast from the supermarket is a local market experience. This was one to make sure not to miss. A great place to feel like a local and also shop for souvenirs. There were a collective of vendors that shared a plaza - quick bites, small market vendors and variety stores.

D. Taquería El Mexicano

Unfortunately this local taco restaurant was not open when we arrived but we saw it was highly reviewed. If you happen to be here when its open be sure to visit and let us know how it is!

E. San Miguel Church

This Catholic church has nice architecture and historical statues and a nice serene spot to stop at and visit.

F. Benito Juarez Park

This park is situated in the center of Cozumel. A great spot to rest as it was around the mid-point of our walking tour. Lovely spot to people watch and there are also larger vendors to purchase gifts as well as restaurants.

G, H, I, J. Swallows Sculpture, Mexican War Memorial, Isla Cozumel Anchor, Cozumel Municipal Graveyard

These last few stops are bundled near together and conveniently not far from the port so once you have arrived here you're parallel to where your ship is docked. Some of these locations were of interest from us from our research online in scenic statues and monuments. Overall, an excellent and walking tour that gave us a nice variety of local and landmark spots.
